In 1746 he inherited estates in Yorkshire from his great-uncle Sir Marmaduke Francis Constable, 4th and last Baronet, of Everingham (see Constable baronets), and assumed the surname of Constable in lieu of his patronymic. However, there is no evidence that Jane or her three sisters and two brothers were brought up in poverty. Survived by his sister, Diana Helmore, and nieces Katharine Helmore and Charlotte Helmore. He was appointed Chairman of the Mirror Group Newspapers following the death of his father in 1991.
